Yagi-Shingu Bus is a famous because of its longest mileage which doesn’t include the express way.
This bus has covered 166.9km a day from Kintetsu Yamato Yagi Station to JR Shingu Station. Its numbers of bus stops are 169.
On the way to Shingu, there are many points to see, such as Totsukawa village which is the biggest village in Japan, Kiisanchi no Reijo and Sankeimichi (Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range and Surrounding Cultural Landscapes), and some famous hot springs.
How about going on a hike in world heritage, and relax yourself in the hot spring?

1st Day

Yagi Station

Starting point for Shingu Sta. Total mileage is 166.9km, and it takes about 6hours and half.
In the “Kashihara navi plaza” (south gate of the station), don’t forget to purchase reasonable bus ticket ”168 bus traveling ticket”.
If you would like to have lunch in the bus, it is better to get it around the station.

Gojo Bus Center

In the Gojo Bus Center, we take a rest for 10min. After departing here, it’s a long way for next restroom.
Please be sure to use there. Walking 100m for the west, there is “Kakinohasushi Yamato”. We recommend it.
Bus departs on time. Be careful to miss it!

“Kakinoha sushi”…Local cuisine inherited in Nara, wrapped with persimmon leaves.
Nara is an area where doesn’t face the ocean, so the merchants at the time put lots of salt on the fish(mackerel, salmon) to prevent from decay when carrying them from the port.

Get out from the south gate of the JR Gojo station, you can see the bus stop soon.
There is no grocery store, please prepare your lunch in advance.

We take a rest about 20min.
Near the bus stop, “Tanize Sustention Bridge” is the popular sightseeing spot.
It is 297m long, 54m high, surrounded with mountains.
You can overlook beautiful Kumano River from there.
It may be little scared, but it is really nice view.
If you missed the bus, next one is 2hours later. Please be careful!

Hotel Subaru

“Gensen Kakenagashi” hot spring (Water comes directly from the hot spring source, not boiled artificially) is the most sales point.
Of course, outdoor bath (Roten Buro) is also nice.
Almost of the room is the Japanese-style room. For dinner, please enjoy Japanese-style dishes which is cooked with local fresh foodstuff.
Also,“Yaen”(manpower self-ropeway) is recommended. Please try it once.

2nd Day

Hotel Subaru Hatenashi Settlment Kumano Hongu Taisha

One of the “Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage Routes” (World Heritage), Kohechi is the praying road for Kumano Grand Shrine from Koyasan.
It lasts for 72km. In July, 2004, it was recorded as world heritage.
“Road” which is recognized as the world heritage is the only 2 in the world, with Santiago de Compostelain in Spain.
On the way to Kumano Grand Shrine, we can find the stone pavement, mossy stone Buddha in the path and we feel traditional atmosphere.
In Totsukawa village, Hatenashi village is called “village on the sky”.
There remains Japanese beautiful old style life. There is the nice place to tourists feel relax.

Arrived at JR Shingu station!
Transfer connection with train is not so good, so we recommend to stay overnight at Shingu and go home via Wakayama, Osaka, Mie and Nagoya prefecture next morning.

Totsukawa murayakuba

Bus stops in front of the village office.
Around here, there are two public hot springs and known as “Tosenji Onsen”.
One is “Taki no Yu” (south of the office). “Taki no Yu” means hot spring in water fall.
As its name, you can see water fall from the outdoor hot spring (Roten Buro).
In Totsukawa museum of history and folklore near the bus stop, we can learn histories and cultures in Totsukawa.
In road side station ”Totsukawago” (east of the office), many local production kind of mushrooms and survivors has been sold.
In the restaurant, fresh buckwheat (Soba) is recommended.
Around here, there are some inns (Ryokan) and guest houses. Why don’t you stay there?
On weekdays, if you catch the bus (14:46) for Totsukawa Onsen, you can move to Totsukawa Onsen area, too. There are also some inns and shops.

The Bus stop at Narakotsu bus center.
Cross the road to the south, there is public hot spring ”Iori no Yu” . Please enjoy hot spring and foot bath (free) with beautiful view of lake.
Surprisingly, it is possible to drink. Why don’t you try?
In roadside station ”Totsukawago”, you can get something to eat for backhaul.
